The Russian Imperial is the 28th in the David Oscarson's series of Limited Edition Writing Instruments and marks the 100th anniversary of the Romanov family's abdication from the throne.

Produced in four primary color variations, each limited to an aggregate production of 304 pieces, the collection stands as a tribute to the unparalleled artistry and craftsmanship associated with the Romanov dynasty. Crafted from solid Sterling Silver, the cap and barrel feature repeating Guilloche sunbursts overlaid with interlocking double-leaf accouterments reminiscent of the 1896 Coronation Egg commemorating the 1896 coronation of Nicholas II. Two double-headed eagles adorn the gripping section and the clip is ornamented with three pairs of floral rosettes. Cyrillic font encircles the cap ring and the entire body is finished in Hot Enamel.

The Russian Imperial Collection continues in the spirit of artistic mastery and the tradition of Old World craftsmanship by combining the centuries-old technique of Guilloche with the art and expertise of Hard Enamel. Using a mortar and pestle, a composition of glass, water and metal oxides is ground for hours by hand. When settled, the water is removed, leaving the fine paste that is the basis for hard enamel.

A quill is then used to apply each coat of the mixture to the surface of the metal, ensuring that the entire Guilloche area is completely covered in enamel. The components are then fired in a furnace at temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, fusing the enamel to the metal and forming a layer of glass. After cooling, the pieces are manually ground with a diamond file, restoring their proper shape and surface. This tedious process is repeated at length until the level of enamel reaches the depth required to cover the peaks and fill the valleys of each intricate guilloche pattern.

When the final stages of firing are completed, the pieces are polished and buffed, revealing the velvet finish of translucent hard enamel. Production of translucent hard enamel demands the highest levels of patience, experience and skill. A five-year apprenticeship is required to ensure that the highest levels of quality will be met in each individual Collection piece.

Each David Oscarson Writing Instrument is available as a Fountain Pen in Fine, Medium, or Broad. It is also available as a Rollerball Pen or can be purchased as a convertible set to switch between the two writing modes."}

Produced in three color variations, each will be limited to production of 88 pieces (including fountain pens and roller balls).

From the Bronze Age to medieval times, Viking mythology was the religion of Scandinavia. Today, legends of the Vikings are present in all cultures as a result of their ability to travel and plunder, leaving their marks across the face of Europe and the known world. Known for their ‘longships’ and crude weaponry, the Vikings also developed a crude runic alphabet, seen chiseled into huge granite rocks, called rune stones; they can be seen across most of modern-day Europe.

Valhalla (Valhöll) literally translated means ‘Hall of the Slain” and is in essence a Viking heaven, or ‘Otherworld’ into which Viking warriors pass upon leaving this life. It is a great structure – much like a Roman Coliseum – with 640 doorways, through each of which 960 champions can march shoulder to shoulder. Its rafters are spear shafts and its tiles are shields of gold. Here, fallen champions spend all day gaming and fighting one another in battle. At the end of the day, the dead and wounded are all healed, so they can spend the night feasting on the flesh of a boar whose flesh never diminishes and drinking from the udders of a magic goat.

In Valhalla, three Viking gods prevail: the Nordic Trinity, Odin, Thor and Frey.

Odin, ‘God of the Slain’ and ‘All-Father’ lives throughout all ages ruling his kingdom absolutely, governing all things great and small. He fashioned Heaven and Earth and is also credited for creating Man and giving him an immortal spirit ‘which shall never perish though the body crumble to dust or burn to ashes’. Odin is also the patron god of poetry and one of his poems slithers in the form of a serpent in high relief on the cap of the Valhalla Collection. Literally translated from runic script, the poem reads ‘he who would read the sacred runes is wise to waste no words’. Odin’s name is the basis for our modern day Wednesday (Odinsdag).

Thor is of course the God of Thunder. He is the guardian of the world – both of gods and men. His mighty hammer Mjöllnir is a short-handled weapon (the dwarf who forged it was interrupted in his work by a gnat stinging him on the eyelid). Named after lightning, or literally ‘ a thunderbolt’ it can be swung or thrown, and will always return to his hand like a boomerang. It is with this weapon that Thor maintains the stability of the world and keeps forces of chaos in check. Thor’s name is the basis for our modern day Thursday (Thorsdag).

Frey is the god of fertility. He is the noblest of gods. He controls the rain and sunshine and therefore the natural increase of the earth and it is good to call upon him for fruitful seasons and for peace; he also controls the good fortunes of men. Frey was the paramount god of the Swedes and revered as the divine ancestor of their kings. Frey is said to have built the great temple at Uppsala (just north of Stockholm) when he made it his chief seat and the Swedes made sacrifices to him at weddings: ‘He bestows peace and pleasure on mortals’. In Norse mythology, Frey is remembered as a symbol of the divine marriage between the sky and the earth that produces Spring. (His twin sister, Freyja, is the most excellent of the goddesses and was the mistress of Odin for a time. Her name is the basis for our modern-day Friday.)

In contrast to the crude art of the Viking era, the Valhalla Collection is portrayed in the technical expertise of Guilloché engraving and the artistic mastery of Hard Enamel. The Collection incorporates three levels of Guilloché and three colors of translucent and opaque hard enamel on each Collection piece.

The Medieval design of this Limited Edition requires three separate stages of engraving. The entire body of the pen is first cut down to the level of the background, leaving the outlines of the rune stone and longship in high relief. The wave and granite patterns are then engraved onto the surface of the body of the pen. The third stage of engraving applies the smaller serpent motif to the surface of the granite; the larger serpent remaining raised in high relief.

Each David Oscarson Writing Instrument is available as a Fountain Pen in Fine, Medium, or Broad. Produced in five color variations, each will be limited to production of 88 pieces (including fountain pens and roller balls).

The Tree of Life in its various forms is recognized in all cultures as a symbol of immortality and eternal life. From ancient Chinese and Egyptian culture to Germanic paganism and Mesoamerica, it has been sought after throughout the ages. And, while depicted in many different contexts, the imagery across all cultures is essentially the same. Not to be confused with the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, the tree of Life is the tree whose fruit gives eternal life to all who might obtain it. In addition to its religious references, it is a reminder of our past (roots - ancestry), present (tree body - knots included) and future (fruit – labor and posterity).

The Assyrian Tree of Life was represented by a series of nodes and criss-crossing lines and was an important religious symbol, attended to by eagle-headed gods and priests, or the king himself. In Chinese mythology, a carving of the Tree of Life depicts a phoenix and a dragon – the dragon representing immortality. There is also a Taoist story of a tree that produces a peach every three thousand years; the person who eats the fruit receives immortality.

In Egyptian mythology, Isis and Osiris are the first couple, said to have emerged from the acacia tree of Saosis, which the Egyptians considered the Tree of Life. The Egyptians Holy Sycamore also stood on the threshold of life and death, connecting the two worlds. In Norse religion, the Tree of Life appears as Yggdrasil, a massive yew or ash surrounded by extensive lore. Other examples include Thor’s Oak and the sacred tree at Uppsala.

The Hebrew Bible reference the Tree of Life in the Book of Genesis, in which the fruit of the tree give Adam and Eve Eternal Life. It is important to distinguish between this, the Tree of Life, which fruit they were allowed to “freely eat” and the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, which was forbidden. Once they had partaken of the forbidden fruit, God set angels and a flaming sword “to guard the way of the Tree of Life, lest Adam should stretch forth his hand and partake of the fruit thereof and live forever in his sins”.

The Book of Mormon gives a detailed account of the prophet Lehi’s dream, in which the Tree of Life is a manifestation of God’s love for all mankind. The fruit of the tree represents Immortality and Eternal Life, which Lehi desires for himself and for his family, and the account explains the difficulties and rewards associated in obtaining it. Depictions of world trees are also found in Mesoamerican cultures, including the Maya, Aztec, Izapan, Mixtec, Olmec and others, relating to calendars, seasons and a representation of the Milky Way.

Consistent with previous designs, the Tree of Life Collection is represented in the expertise of Guilloché engraving and the artistic mastery of Hard Enamel. The Collection incorporates four levels of Guilloché and three colors of translucent and opaque hard enamel on each Collection piece.

The entire body of the pen is first cut down to the level of the background, leaving the outlines of the roots, branches, fruit and leaves in high relief. The background and bark patterns are then engraved onto the surface of the body of the pen. The third and fourth stages of engraving apply the smaller fruit and leaf patterns inside the respective areas.

Each David Oscarson Writing Instrument is available as a Fountain Pen in Fine, Medium, or Broad.
The Alfred Bernhard Nobel is the thirteenth in the David Oscarson™ series of Limited Edition writing instruments. Produced in five color variations, each limited to an aggregate production of 63 pieces (including fountain pens and roller balls), the Nobel Collection will stand as a lasting tribute to the sixty three years of Alfred Nobel’s historical life and his enduring influence around the world.

Two divisive elements comprise this Limited Edition that parallel Alfred Nobel’s life: Destruction and Peace. Inspired by his invention of dynamite, this one-of-a-kind collection features an exploding stick of dynamite on the barrel, coupled with a burning fuse while the years 1833 and 1896 rest at its base. The bottom of the barrel emulates a blasting cap (another of Nobel’s inventions) engraved – in Swedish – with the words Varning (Warning) Tändhattar (Blasting Caps) and Fara (Danger). Four levels of Guilloche engraving are employed on the barrel, depicting an explosive blast. Four colors of Hard Enamel are then kiln-fired to the surface of the barrel without separation, merging outward from White to Yellow to Orange to Red.

By sharp contrast, the Nobel cap features a simple repeating pattern of a White Dove: the international symbol for peace. Engraved above is the name of Alfred Bernhard Nobel. Adorning the top of the crown are the unmistakable three crowns of Sweden, most recognized from the top of Stadshuset (City Hall) in Stockholm where each year on December 10th prize winners enjoy dinner and an evening with the King and Queen of Sweden.

Each David Oscarson Writing Instrument is available as a Fountain Pen in Fine, Medium, or Broad.

From $5,600.00
In May, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on an expedition of epic proportion. Having accepted the charge from President Thomas Jefferson, their mission was to explore, map and document the vast new region of the United States acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. This fearless ensemble, known as The Corps of Discovery included Sacagawea, her son, “Pompey”, 45 young frontiersmen and Seaman (Captain Lewis’s 150-pound Newfoundland dog). Aided by this heroic group, Captains Lewis and Clark would become the first of their nation to reach the Pacific Ocean by land, facilitating trade with the Orient and unlocking the wealth of North America. “Future generations” Jefferson predicted, “would fill up the canvas we begin”. In 1802, Jefferson had offered to buy the port city of New Orleans from France, but Napoleon Bonaparte, faced with another war with England made a counteroffer including the entire Louisiana Territory (820,000 square miles) for $15 million, a sum of almost twice the federal budget. For just 3 cents an acre, Thomas Jefferson more than doubled the size of his country with the single stroke of a pen.

Lewis and Clark’s instructions, according to Jefferson were to “after your departure from the United States” find the Northwest Passage and the most direct route to the Pacific; draw maps; make detailed observations of the soils, minerals, crops, animals and weather; meet the Indians and record their languages, populations, religions, customs, food, clothing and willingness to trade with the Americans.

Equipped with a massive inventory of food, barter goods, camp equipment, technical instruments, arms and ammunition, the Corps of Discovery departed from St. Louis, Missouri and made its way to Camp Dubois, Illinois where they would spend the winter preparing for the impending journey. President Jefferson had written and signed a Letter of Credit promising the full support of the United States Government for any additional expenses incurred along the way and had also developed a code matrix whereby he and Lewis could communicate through the written word using the key word “artichokes” to decipher the code. Finally, on May 14th, 1804, at 4:00 in the afternoon, the Corps of Discovery disembarked from Camp Dubois and sailed across the Mississippi to St. Charles, Missouri and the journey began.

Documenting and mapping the newly acquired Territory, Lewis, Clark and others in the company kept meticulously detailed journals describing their fascinating trek across North America. The peoples, landscapes, new plant and animal life they encountered were carefully documented along the way. The Corps of Discovery made the historic journey to the Pacific Ocean, arriving at the mouth of the Columbia River November 7th, 1805, where winter was spent at Fort Clatsop, Oregon. They had hoped to find an easier way home by sea, but were forced to return by land - the way they had come - departing March 23rd, and arriving in St. Louis on September 23rd, 1806. News of their arrival had preceded them and a huge celebration followed for the Corps of Discovery. The success of Lewis and Clark’s expedition became an integral part of American History.

Few people in American history have accomplished what Lewis and Clark did: complete and document a journey over 8,000 miles long, traveling the full length of the Missouri River, and return to tell about it. America had changed, and Lewis and Clark had made it happen, imprinting their memory in American History forever.

The Lewis and Clark Limited Edition Collection stands as a tribute to the two Captain-explorers and the courage of their unparalleled journey. Lewis and Clark’s signatures are represented respectively in high relief surrounded by a background of gentle river currents underneath. Both Collection pieces feature a map of the Louisiana Purchase marking the Lewis and Clark Trail from St. Louis, Missouri all the way to Fort Clatsop, Oregon. The Meriwether Lewis cap features a telescope clip and a compass rose is engraved on the barrel. The William Clark cap holds a feathered clip and a Peace Medal (given by Lewis and Clark to many of the Indian Chiefs along the Trail) is engraved on the barrel. William Clark became the superintendent of Indian Affairs (and later Governor of the Missouri Territory) and raised Sacagawea’s son, Pompey from 1810.

Each David Oscarson Writing Instrument is available as a Fountain Pen in Fine, Medium, or Broad.

Produced in three primary color variations, each limited to an aggregate production of 70 pieces (including fountain pens and roller balls), the Linnaeus Collection will stand as a lasting tribute to the seventy years of Carl von Linné’s work and his enduring worldwide influence.

The plant and floral elements of this Limited Edition are a reminder of the great scientist’s love for nature. Inspired by his numerous great works, this one-of-a-kind collection features multiple levels of guilloché engraving and seven colors of Hot Enamel.

The Carl Linnaeus Collection continues in the spirit of artistic mastery and the tradition of Old World craftsmanship by combining the centuries-old technique of Guilloché with the art and expertise of Hard Enamel.

Using a mortar and pestle, a composition of glass, water and metal oxides is ground for hours by hand. When settled, the water is removed, leaving the fine paste that is the basis for hard enamel. A quill is then used to apply each coat of the mixture to the surface of the metal, ensuring that the entire guilloché area is completely covered in enamel. The components are then fired in a furnace at temperatures exceeding 1,000° F, fusing the enamel to the metal and forming a layer of glass.

After cooling, the pieces are manually ground with a diamond file, restoring their proper shape and surface. This tedious process is repeated at length until the level of enamel reaches the depth required to cover the peaks and fill the valleys of each intricate guilloché pattern.

When the final stages of firing are completed, the pieces are polished and buffed, revealing the velvet finish of translucent hard enamel.

Production of translucent hard enamel demands the highest levels of patience, experience and skill.
The Rosetta Stone collection is the twenty-first in the David Oscarson™ series of Limited Edition Writing Instruments. Produced in three primary color variations, each will be limited to production of 77 pieces (including Fountain Pen and Roller Ball styles).

The Rosetta Stone was created in 196 BC as a tribute to Ptolemy V who began to rule Egypt at the age of five and reigned 204 – 181 BC. The stone was erected on March 25th during his ninth year of reign and contained a decree issued by a congress of priests who gathered at Memphis. The inscriptions proclaim Ptolemy V as the divine ruler of Egypt, Ever-Living and Beloved of Ptah, the Egyptian creator-god, maker of all things. In exchange for his divine status, Ptolemy V granted tax exemptions to the priesthood in Memphis whose political support was vital to ruling the kingdom.

The decree was written in three languages: the upper portion in ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs (language of the gods), the middle portion in Demotic script (the language of documents) and the lower portion in ancient Greek (the language of the Greeks as used by the Ptolemaic government). The Greek portion originally written for the Egyptian public to understand would later provide modern-day scholars, chiefly Jean-Francois Champollion in 1822, the key needed to unlock the mysteries of ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic text.

On July 15, 1799, the Rosetta Stone was re-discovered by French soldier Pierre-Francois Bouchard in the city of Rosetta (Modern day Rashid). The Rosetta Stone remained in control of French troops until March of 1801 when British troops took possession and transported it to England where it was presented to King George III. The stone now rests in the British Museum of Art and remains to this day the museum’s single most visited object.

Crafted from .925 Sterling Silver, the Rosetta Stone Collection incorporates multiple levels of diamond-cut Guilloché engraving and a combination of Translucent and Opaque Hard Enamels. Each individual component is Guilloche-engraved and repeatedly kiln-fired and filed by hand, resulting in the beautiful and enduring finish celebrated in each magnificent Collection piece.

The Rosetta Stone Collection is unique as it is the first to incorporate moving parts; each pen barrel is divided into three rotating sections representing the three languages inscribed on the original Rosetta Stone (Hieroglyphic, Demotic and Greek). Each rotating section is then engraved with one of the three significant inscriptions from the original stone in all three languages denoting Ptolemy (at the top end), Ever-Living (in the middle section) and Beloved of Ptah (at the base) as outlined in the original decree. The Greek, as it was for Champollion is the key to aligning all three texts in their correct order as inscribed on the original stone.

Each pen cap features the Winged Disk of Horus, which scholars agree originally crowned the top of the Rosetta stone. The Winged Disk is inlaid with multiple colors of opaque hard enamel and polished to a seamless finish with the precious metal background.

Crowning each pen cap is the face of an original Egyptian coin portraying an image of Ptolemy V during his reign; the reverse of the coin features an eagle and is located at the base of the pen barrel.

Positioned at the base of the clip is the familiar symbol of the Ankh which represents the concept of eternal life; the Egyptian gods are often portrayed carrying it by its loop, or bearing one in each hand.

Each David Oscarson Writing Instrument is available as a Fountain Pen in Fine, Medium, or Broad. Produced in three primary color variations, each will be limited to production of 800 pieces (including Fountain Pen and Roller Ball styles) in commemoration of the 800th anniversary of King John’s official sealing of the document June 15th, 1215.

Magna Carta (Latin for "the Great Charter"), also called Magna Carta Libertatum (Latin for "the Great Charter of the Liberties"), is a charter agreed by King John of England to make peace between the unpopular King and a group of rebel barons. It promised the protection of church rights, protection for the barons from illegal imprisonment, access to swift justice, and limitations on feudal payments to the Crown. The charter became part of English political life and was typically renewed by each monarch in turn. -- Magna Carta was a major step in the shaping of the English nation, and he believed that the barons at Runnymede in 1215 were not just representing the nobility, but the people of England as a whole, standing up to a tyrannical ruler in the form of King John.

In the late 18th century, the United States Constitution became the supreme law of the land, recalling the manner in which Magna Carta had come to be regarded as fundamental law. The Constitution's Fifth Amendment guarantees that "no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law", a phrase that was derived from Magna Carta. In addition, the Constitution included a similar writ in the Suspension Clause, Article 1, Section 9: "The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion, the public safety may require it."

Each of these proclaims that no person may be imprisoned or detained without evidence that he or she committed a crime. The writers of the U.S. Constitution wished to ensure that the rights they already held, such as those that they believed were provided by Magna Carta, would be preserved unless explicitly curtailed. Crafted from .925 Sterling Silver, the Magna Carta Collection incorporates multiple levels of diamond-cut Guilloché engraving and a combination of Translucent and Opaque Hard Enamels. Each individual component is Guilloche-engraved and repeatedly kiln-fired and filed by hand, resulting in the beautiful and enduring finish celebrated in each magnificent Collection piece. -- Article 39 of the Magna Carta is featured on the barrel of each Magna Carta collection piece, which reads (in Latin):
Nullus liber homo capiatur, vel imprisonetur, aut disseisiatur, aut utlagetur, aut exuletur, aut aliquo modo destruatur; nec super eum ibimus, nec super eum mittemus, nisi per legale judicium parium suorum vel per legem terre.-- Translation: No free-man shall be seized, or imprisoned, or disseized of land, or outlawed, or in any way destroyed; nor will we condemn him, nor will we commit him to prison, excepting by the legal judgment of his peers, or by the laws of the land. -- Each pen cap features the British Flag (Union Jack), in translucent hard enamel; each pen barrel features the American flag (Old Glory) in opaque hard enamel. Crowning each pen cap is the primary seal of King John, which was used to authenticate the document in 1215; the secondary seal is located at the base of the pen barrel.
