  1. Montegrappa Tirebouchoun Fountain Pen Medium #44/100

Montegrappa Tirebouchoun Fountain Pen Medium #44/100

    $4,350.00

Italy is the world’s largest producer of wine, and – for the last half-century – has added a category of international wines to its traditional greats, the noble Amarone, Barolo and Brunello, a host of new wines that rank with the finest the world can offer. But how could Montegrappa create a pen that exudes Italy’s love for fine wines, surely the drink of the Gods?

After the runaway success of the Grappa Pen, constructed from the materials used to distil that enchanting drink, it was apparent that wine, too, deserved a similar hommage. Made from the oak timber used in wine barrels, with stainless steel metalwork representing the hardware associated with winemaking, the new Tirebouchon pen reflects the materials associated with traditional wine-making. “Tirebouchon” is French for “corkscrew”, and the use of this Gallic term as the name for the new pen appropriately pays homage to the origins of the grapes that comprise many of the so-called “Super Tuscans”: wines grown in Tuscany but using French varietals associated with the great Bordeaux, along with Sangiovese grapes. The pen barrel and the cap are wine-barrel-shaped, with metal rings to represent those bands that hold the wooden staves in place.

For the pocket clip, Montegrappa’s designers formed die-cast miniature of clusters of grapes on the vine in palladium-plated sterling silver. Inset into the cap’s top is an engraving of a grape leaf. The nib of the fountain pen is made of solid 18k gold and is embellished with the octagonal pattern the serves as Montegrappa’s motif. This pen’s name also describes the surprise within. Hidden inside the pen body under the cap is a foldable corkscrew – fully functional and extremely strong, and a registered, proprietary design. Strictly limited to only 100 fountain pens and 100 rollerball pens, Tirebouchon should be regarded as one would a once-in-a-lifetime vintage. Like a fine wine that improves with age, the real wood construction with acquire its own unique patina. Here, then, is a pen to savour.

Montegrappa Blue Nile Silver Fountain Pen Medium #959/1912

    $5,250.00

It bears the name of the monumental splendour. Luxor Blue Nile is a fountain pen, in limited edition, with which Montegrappa recalls the mysteries of ancient Egypt and the fascination of one of the most advanced and artistically inclined civilisation in antiquity. The major symbols of the great civilisation of the Nile are represented on the decoration of the body and of the cap: Thot, the god of wisdom, theriomorphic divinity, creator of the hieroglyphic writing and of the winged solar disc, the symbol of the antique ritual of eternal life.

The sacred scarab is represented on the top of the cap with two eyes of natural sapphire, as those of the cobra that winds around the clip of the Luxor Blue Nile. The body in blue mother-of-pearl celluloid recalls the Blue Nile, sacred source of life. The gods Horus and Isis attend to the ceremony. Luxor Blue Nile is realized in 1912 pieces in sterling silver.

The cap depicts "The Judgment" for passage into the next world as Horus, judge of the dead, weighs a feather against the deceased heart as a measure a life of good or ill deeds. Thoth now documents the deeds of the deceased as a scribe. Isis wraps her son Horus in her wings to protect and support him in his judgment. Also present at the funeral ritual are Maat, goddess of truth and Anubis, protector of the dead (in the form of canopic urns). The two themes of the pharaoh's crown adorn the cap, vulture goddess protector of upper Egypt and the cobra protector of lower Egypt.

Crowning the pen is the scarab beetle, symbol of eternal life and sapphires set in the eyes of both the cobra and scarab. The 18 karat gold nib with platinum inlay shows the symbolic gestures with the falcon and sun disk iconography.

  11. Montegrappa Animalia Fountain Pen Medium #519/1100

Montegrappa Animalia Fountain Pen Medium #519/1100

    $2,750.00

To create Animalia, Montegrappa employed a special technique: engraving with a burin, which is a small scalpel used by highly specialized craftsmen to cut away a fine shaving from the metal surface, giving a two-dimensional impression of the image.

This magnificent achievement begins with the artist's design, reduced exactly to the finished size. The design is then transferred onto tracing paper that is fixed onto the smooth body of the pen. The barrel is covered with a thin layer of gesso powder, which receives the lines when the design is traced once more. The craftsman then outlines the design with a metal point to delicately engrave the surface. The final engraving is made with the burin, wielded either by the hand alone or with the aid of a hammer. Finally, details are filled with gold, enhancing the work's value and elegance by providing a contrast between the various elements of the design.

With Animalia, Montegrappa has permitted a depth of expression never previously achieved, giving the craftsman the dignity of a sculptor who has created a low-relief image from a decorative element. Animalia is produced in numbered and limited edition of 1,100 fountain pens in sterling silver (approx the number of endangered mammalian species in the world), 300 rollerball pens in sterling silver (approx the number of endangered reptile species in the world), 100 fountain pens and 100 rollerball pens in 18K gold (approx the number of endangered animal species in Italy). Each 18K gold nib in the collection is engraved with the design of a tiger, repeating the miracle of an engraving that is remarkably profound and complex, even by the standards of Montegrappa.

  12. Montegrappa Grappa Rollerball

    Montegrappa Grappa Rollerball

    $2,700.00

Joining Montegrappa’s Cult Collection, the Grappa Pen was inspired by the renowned distillate “grappa”- an Italian specialty that nowadays has devotees all over the world. This incredible writing instrument was also thought as homage to Bassano del Grappa – the town Montegrappa calls home, for the place is just as well one of the major producers of this refined liquor. The “grappa” distinct personality is defined by the type and quality of the grapes used, as well as the distillation process or “secret recipe.” As proof of grappa’s ascension to the ranks of chic liquors, many of Italy’s finest wine producers now bottle their own “grappa”, including the “Super Tuscans” Sassicaia and Tignanello. There can be no higher accolade. As for the enjoyment of this distillate, grappa is offered in four general categories: young, cask-conditioned, aromatic and aromatised. Grappa tastings begin with young grappa, then continue with cask-conditioned and aromatic grappa and finish with aromatised grappa.

Previously unimaginable, grappa is now as complex a subject as wine. Tastings are as complex and intense as those for the finest wines, and a culture of grappa devotees ensure that it will forever retain its new and lofty status. Cincin! Both the historic traditions of grappa distilling and the aesthetic of steampunk have inspired and influenced the design of the latest addition to Montegrappa’s Cult collection. The materials used in the pens’ manufacture, reminiscent of the distilling vessels, include stainless steel, brass and copper for the cap and barrel, employed in the manner of the actual equipment’s construction. Montegrappa’s technicians executed hand-applied hammering techniques on the copper components, while tiny screws – both functional and ornamental – remind the user of the technological inspiration of the product. Even the pocket clip continues the grappa-making theme, formed to recall the copper tubing used in the distilling process. Exquisite touches detail both ends of this remarkable writing instrument. Inserted into the top of the cap is a disc made of real cork as used in a grappa bottle top, beneath a filigree-cut octagonal grid recalling Montegrappa’s eight-sided symbol. Having been dipped in aged grappa, the cork emanates scents of grappa.

Lastly, the 18k gold duotone nib is embellished with a bunch of grapes on the vine. The Cult Collection Grappa Pen has been issued as fountain pen, with both cartridge and converter feeders, and as a rollerball pen. Production is limited to 1912 for the fountain pen and 1912 for the rollerball, the given number denotes the year of establishment of the Montegrappa company. The blind cap of the Grappa pen is reserved for the limited edition number. Embracing the spirit of grappa and its life-enhancing properties, the Grappa Pens arrive in special packaging not unlike the presentation of an actual bottle of the liquor. The pen comes in a blown glass bottle with a large globe base, made by local artisans, bearing the Montegrappa coat of arms in metallic finish.
